Κάνει βόλτα το φεγγάρι,
βγαίνουν έξοδο οι φαντάροι,
κι είναι μια βραδιά ωραία
στην Αθήνα, στον Περαία.
Χάθηκαν οι καστανάδες
κι οι αργόσχολοι βοριάδες,
κι απ' τη ρίζα του χειμώνα
φύτρωσε μια ανεμώνα.
Όμορφή μου Κατερίνα,
του μπαξέ μου καρδερίνα,
άνοιξε την αγκαλιά σου
και τα ροδοβλέφαρά σου•
να χυμήξω στ' ακρογιάλια
του κορμιού σου τα καθάρια
που 'χουν βότσαλα κοχύλια,
τ' ουρανού τα πετραχήλια.
Βγαίνει βόλτα η λατέρνα,
στολισμένη ως τη φτέρνα,
κι ένα αμούστακο χαμίνι
μιας μικρής τον ήλιο πίνει.
Κι ένας άνεμος αντάρτης
σαν ηλιοκαμένος ναύτης
βγήκε τσάρκα στα σοκάκια
να γλυκάνει τα φαρμάκια.

Chestnut sellers now have left us,
and the north winds now have gone,

The organ grinder's on his walk,
His cart adorned from top to toe,
And there a young lad drinking in,

Like sun tanned face of sailor man,
It blows along the narrow streets
And brightens up this dawning day.
